Dr. Mandel feels very fortunate to have been able to fulfill his childhood dream of being a surgeon to the people in the community he was raised. The Doctor grew up in Cranford, NJ where he graduated high school in 1976. He was a double major in Biochemistry and Fine Arts at Brandeis University and received a Masters in Science from Georgetown University in 1981.

Dr. Mandel began his medical training at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. He graduated in 1985 with an MD and continued there when he began his residency. He transitioned to Yale University where he became Chief resident and completed his surgical training in 1990. Dr. Mandel was full time faculty at Yale until 1992, serving as an Assistant Professor of Surgery and acting Chief of Trauma during the Gulf War. He joined the Overlook staff when he moved back to New Jersey in 1992, where he is currently the Cancer Liaison to the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Mandel is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the Society of Surgical Oncologists. He is a member of the American Society of Breast Disease and the American Society of Breast Surgeons.

In keeping with his training as an academic surgeon, Dr. Mandel has continued his emphasis on teaching the science and art of surgery as he feels that this goes hand in hand with caring for patients. Since 1992, Dr. Mandel has been Clinical faculty at Columbia University Medical Center as an Assistant Professor which has allowed him significant involvement with the residents' training who rotate through Overlook Medical Center. This dedication lead to his being awarded Columbia University Department of Surgery's most coveted award, "Teacher of the Year" in 2011. Dr. Mandel truly believes that having residents involved with his patients assures that someone is always around the corner to make sure that every detail of their care is properly attended to while allowing him the honor of fulfilling the teaching traditions of Hippocrates and Maimonides.

Dr. Mandel has been selected for Castle Connelly's list of Top Doctors in the New York Metro Area yearly since 2007 and therefore selected by Inside Jersey magazine as a Top Doctor. He was also included in their special publications listing Top Docs for Women's Health and Top Cancer Docs. Additionally, Dr. Mandel was again voted as a Jersey Choice Top Doctor by his peers as featured in New Jersey Monthly magazine. He was the recipient of the Patients' Choice Award since 2012.

The doctor has been honored by Overlook View magazine in the Overlook Hall of Fame. Dr. Mandel is included in a number View articles regarding a variety of topics in the area of his specialty as well, including Breast Cancer (articles #1 and #2), Pancreatic Cancer and Surgical Education.
